Assignment: Quiet American and the Vietnam War
Dilemmas of Democracy and the responsibilities of the West; he was determinedâ⬠¦ O do good, not to any individual but to a country' (Greene, 18). He believed preventing the spread of communism would be beneficial for all. Based in the mysterious Asian country as a secret agent, his Job was to import weapons and set up attacks throughout the country. One incident describes: ââ¬Å"that day all over Saigon innocent bicycle pumps had proved to contain bombs which had gone off at the stroke of elevenâ⬠¦. It was better from their point of view to let people assume that the bombs were communistâ⬠(Greene, 18-135). To stir up anti-communism the U. S. Litany put the blame for civilian casualties on the rebellious Viet Congo, giving a impelling reason to the American people for why they must be stopped. Bloods states how the United States went to Just about any extent ââ¬Å"to prevent the Domino Theoryâ⬠¦ The Communists taking South Vietnam and then the Philippines and march ing across to Hawaii and then on the shores of Californiaâ⬠(Terry, 156). Consequently, government officials promoted fear with the Second Red Scare to incite their citizens to take a stand against the further spread of communism. American troops were placed in Vietnam up until spring 1975.Between that time American troops were let loose in this foreign country. Not only was there a huge culture shock, but also language played as a barrier. Little efforts to understand the Vietnamese culture became an issue in the war. One of the soldiers said, â⬠this old man was running like back towards his cribâ⬠¦ I think people said haltâ⬠but we didn't know no Vietnamese wordsâ⬠and so they shot him (Terry, 7). Another case of miscommunication was when a soldier told a girl to did did AMA and her lack of effort to to why she remained on the road; she couldn't get through traffic or could not understand his Vietnamese.America showed no mercy and was brutal to anything ND anyone that stood in the way. With their endless supplies of artilleries ââ¬Å"if something moved in front of youâ⬠¦. You fired at itâ⬠(Terry, 157). Lots of the poorly trained solders were blind in the Jungles of Vietnam, especially at night, aimlessly shooting to any noise. Americans treated the people of Vietnam poorly as well, women especially. Some of the captives were women and while being integrated they were abused. One of the African American hospital corpsman from the Navy was explaining how he saw a Vietnamese woman get a lit flare shoved in her during questioning (Terry).Pyle never hectically harassed a female, but saw Phonon (his Vietnamese lover) as an object. Disregarding her input, he was going to bring her to America as his wife (Greene). Poor interactions with the Vietnamese people, a negative ambiance was left behind by the Americans. Americans believed they were sincerely helping the Vietnamese. When in reality the people of Vietnam did not see the nee d for their intervention. A soldier explained, â⬠I spent a great deal of time discussing the problem of Vietnam with the Vietnamese people, and what they thought about America's involvement.I learned right away the AR was not the right thing to from the people's point of view' (Terry, 67). The people of Vietnam could have cared less if they were getting military support from America. In fact they did not like the war that was happening on their homeland. ââ¬Å"They want one day to be much the same as another. They don't want our white skins around telling them what they wantâ⬠(Greene, 86). They want to go back to their daily simple lives before any war began. Their way of life is agriculture of rice patties not whether they have a communist or democratic government.Pyle was getting lectured about hat the Vietnamese people wanted, â⬠do you think peasants sit and think of God and Democracyâ⬠¦ We've brought them up in our ideasâ⬠(Greene, 87). Before interve ne from America, people of Vietnam were not thinking of which government is suitable for them. Neutral Vietnamese said, ââ¬Å"However win is the one we go with. The Americans are the ones that are crazy; cause they not gain anything. They lose their lives and their money hereâ⬠(Terry, 67). America did not gain anything directly from this war. There were no significant natural resources and hundreds were dying everyday. As he war got dragged even Americans began to question their intentions of being in the war. While men were fighting for a better government, there was trouble back at the home front. Racism was a big factor still in the United States and that custom was brought overseas. Men of color were grouped together and were mainly put on the front end. An African American war veteran said, â⬠more blacks were dying in combat than whites, proportionately, mainly because more blacks were in combat- oriented units, proportionately, than whitesâ⬠(Terry, 167). White folks were still seen inferior to lacks. There were times were the whole squad would be of black men (Terry). This prevented white Americans from getting hurt during the war. Even though there was inequality, African-Americans were still treated better then in the States. While enlisted, they could hold some kind of power. ââ¬Å"There weren't many opportunities for Where else could a black go and get that label Just like that? â⬠(Terry, 221). African- Americans enlisted as an escape of racism and segregation because in the war zone they are all fighting together under one cause, democracy for the Vietnamese. One big issue in both books for the reason why they lost the war to the Viet Congo was the inability to establish who the enemy was. It was Vietnamese fighting Vietnamese- like the civil war. White folks could not identify whom to shoot, ââ¬Å"It wasn't suppose to be nobody out at night but the marines. Any Vietnamese out at night was the enemyâ⬠¦ It was easy to get k illed by an Americanâ⬠(Terry, 7). The soldiers were trained to take down Vietnamese enemy. Everyone looked like the enemy to them. This became problematic of many innocent lives being killed. For this reason,Americans are seen as mechanical beasts across the globe and will strike at ease in order to win. Americans played different roles in the two books due to the time frame, but had the same goal of fighting for democracy. In The Quiet American being European or white was favorable. ââ¬Å"An advantage of this war was that a European face proved in itself a passport on the field: a European could not be suspected of being an enemy agentâ⬠(Greene, 42). This is why Pyle was able to sneak around Vietnam with bombs. No one suspected Americans (whites) behind the attacks. Things were a lot more useful for Americans before they sent troops over.Once the military got involved, it was non-stop gunshots after gunshot. It got to the point where soldiers did not know why they were shooting, they were Just told to. Around this time, university students also began to question the government along with the upraising of segregation. Congress had a hard time dealing with upset citizens over the dead of Martin Luther King and the questioning of when the war will end. In the efforts to help Vietnam have a better life under Democracy, America suffered from the high death toll, expenses on weapons and supplies, and the extended years spent overseas.

Competence and Career Interests Profiler Paper
I was very surprised when I took the Career Profiler; I had taken something like this when I was a senior in high school. In high school my results suggested that I should do something in agriculture, and now 11 years later it suggests that I should do something in Business, Finance or Law. These results were not surprising to me. These are things that I have actually always been interested in. I think that knowing my competencies is really going to help me with my critical thinking in the future. I had never really considered myself someone who thought logically, but according to my results I do. Knowing this will help me to stop second guessing myself whenever I think I am way off from the mark. I already knew that I am a researcher, because I love knowing everything about everything, I love to investigate topics and see where things started. Having this confirmed will give me the confidence to trust my instincts about myself. I have always loved writing and I already use it to my benefit. So researching and writing are competencies that I already knew that I possessed and having them confirmed was nice. I have already used some of the competencies that I knew I had to help me evaluate arguments. Because I love to research and to write I would already use these to my benefit when it came to arguments or discussions. Before I start any kind of argument or discussion with anyone I always make sure that I know what I am talking about. I try to have as much information as possible, so that way when I am faced with a rebuttal, I have factual information. I donââ¬â¢t like entering something without knowing that I have facts to back me up. It is always good to know what you succeed in so you can draw from those strengths and then you can work on your weaknesses.

Great Bombay Textile Strike
Great Bombay Textile Strike Theà Great Bombay Textile Strikeà was a textileà strikeà called on 18 January 1982 by the mill workers ofà Bombayà (currentlyà Mumbai) under trade union leaderà Dutta Samant. The purpose of the strike was to obtain bonus and wage increases. Nearly 250,000 workers and more than 50 textile mills went on strike in Bombay. [1] History of Mills in Bombay | | Built in 1887,à Swadeshià was Bombay's first textile mill, the first of the factories that spread overà Girangaon, popularly nicknamed as Bombay's ââ¬Å"village of millsâ⬠, in the next decades. By 1982, when Datta Samant led the textile strike, over 240,000 people worked in Girangaon. [2] Protests In late 1981, Dutta Samant was chosen by a large group of Bombay mill workers to lead them in a precarious conflict between the Bombay Mill owners Association and the unions, thus rejecting theà INTUC-affiliated Rashtriya Mill Mazdoor Sanghà which had represented the mill workers for decades. Samant planned a massive strike forcing the entire industry of the city to be shut down for over a year. 3]à It was estimated that nearly 250,000 workers went on strike and more than 50 textile mills were shut in Bombay. In August 1982, the city police briefly went on strike, apparently in sympathy with the workers resulting into the army and Border Security Force to be called in to control the unrest. [1]à Samant demanded that, along with wage hikes, the government scrap theà Bombay Industrial Act of 1947à and that the RMMS would not longer be the only official union of the city industry. While fighting for greater pay and better conditions for workers, Samant and his allies also sought to capitalize and establish their power on the trade union scene in Mumbai. Although Samant had links with the Congress and Maharashtra politicianà Abdul Rehman Antulay,à Prime Ministerà Indira Gandhià considered him a serious political threat. Samant's control of the mill workers made Gandhi and other Congress leaders fear that his influence would spread to the port and dock workers and make him the most powerful union leader in India's commercial capital. Thus the government took a firm stance of rejecting Samant's demands and refusing to budge despite the severe economic losses suffered by the city and the industry. As the strike progressed through the months, Samant's militancy in the face of government obstinacy led to the failure of any attempts at negotiation. Disunity and dissatisfaction over the strike soon became apparent, and many textile mill owners began moving their plants outside the city. After a prolonged and destabilizing confrontation, the strike collapsed with no concessions having been obtained for the workers. The closure of textile mills across the city left tens of thousands of mill workers unemployed and, in the succeeding years, most of the industry moved away from Bombay after decades of being plagued by rising costs and union militancy. Although Samant remained popular with a large block of union activists, his clout and control over Bombay trade unions disappeared. [3] Consequences The majority of the over 80 mills in Central Mumbai closed during and after the strike, leaving more than 150,000 workers unemployed. [4]à Textile industry in Mumbai has largely disappeared, reducing labor migration after the strikes. [5]

Analytical Paper - Essay Example Thus, the world portrayed in this novel resembles that of the nineteenth century laboring America. The paper involves an analysis of how the family, violence, and youth culture issues are manifest in the novel and their existence in the early nineteenth century America. Just like any setting, the author reveals that he has a well-established family and the existence of his family becomes a turning point to him when he finally realized the costs of his youthful acts (William 5). Running from home, after his father whipped him for disobeying his order, he finds himself in a situation of having to serve as a common slave in the ship commonly referred to as his majesty. When he finally finds a way of escaping the shame of constant whips, inadequate food, and clothing, he remembers his family in Hull city and decides to go home. He finds himself in a shock to learn that his family had already gone to America, but just as expected, he finds assistance from his uncle who finally agrees to stay with him as he makes plans of joining his family in America. This makes it clear how important a family is, but the same novel reveals a situation of reliance of the man as the supreme law holder of the family. This is in line with the American nineteenth century la boring society in which every member of the family held importance, and during the securing of slaves by the ââ¬Å"slave mastersââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢, it was pretty obvious how painful it was to lose a member of the family and not be able to see them for life. A factor, amongst many, that led to the civil rightsââ¬â¢ movements of the abolition of vile acts like slave trade. Additionally, women in the novel, besides being generous, are a people who have a lot of influence the controversial issues pertaining to the family. For instance, when William Otter was on his journey to find his parents in Hull, he had

CRITIQUE ON CHAPTER 7 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
CRITIQUE ON CHAPTER 7 - Essay Example An important feature of this chapter is that it assumes that the reader is familiar with material that has been presented in all the preceding chapters. The abstract ideas are critical here, but they rest on concepts that have already been thoroughly discussed such as resource allocation ( p. 8) and perception, action and cognition (p. 9). 2. The close link between media and physics was something of a surprise, since most f the earlier chapters were more concerned with biology, but on reflection this is the missing piece of the puzzle that makes all the earlier concepts hang together. Humans are made up of physical atoms, and the concept of forces interacting in the environment in a dynamic way helps to explain some of the interesting variables in media studies, like for example why some people react in one way to a media stimulus, (e.g. being scared at a horror film) while others act in another way (e.g. just laughing at the fake blood). A lot of factors contribute to how people feel about the horror film, and this was interesting. 3. The chapter ended with an intriguing statement about uncovering ââ¬Å"a science of human communication that is applicable across media, cultures and environmentsâ⬠and I would like to have heard more about this. I suspect that such a science would be very technical, and hard to follow, since the abstract concepts are not easy to remember without concrete examples, but nevertheless this does explain the point behind all this heavy theorizing. I think perhaps the authors should have made this objective clearer at the beginning of the book. Some of the lengthy theory sections might have made more sense if the reader had been aware of this final objective. 4. We talked in class about the weather, as an example of how dynamic interaction takes place and this was a good way of teasing out the relationship between ever changing variables. I liked the

Optical - Essay Example Since the future demands a high speed networking, plastic optical fibre can be a possible option in the next generation. à There are different types of plastic optic fibres. These types arise due to the attributes that determine any type of transmission media. The main attributes are; the length over which data will be transmitted and the speed at which the data will be transmitted over a given length. There can be loss of data during the transmission process, and this arises from scattering the light or absorption of the light by impurities in the fibrelike molecules of water or metals, fibre defects like voids, interfaces of core cladding and the end faces. Any one of the loss mechanisms is usually a function of the transmission waveââ¬â¢s wavelength (Weinert, 1999). One type of a plastic optical fibre is the PMMA. The PMMA loss spectrum has 530 nm, 570 nm and 650 nm transmission windows. All these windows are in the visible range. The 650 nm window is more sensitive because it is narrow. If a 650 nm source shifts with temperature, there could be arousal of problems in this window. On the other hand, the 57 and 530 windows are broader hence less sensitive to source wavelength shifts due to temperature variations. The PMMA plastic fibre is limited to transmitting light of less than 100 m. this is because the losses at 650 nm are 125dB/km while the loses at 570 nm and 530 nm are less than 90dB/km (Plastic Optical Fibres and Applications Conference (Paris)), 1992). Another type of plastic optical fibre is made from perfluorinated polymers. This newer type of plastic optical fibre exhibits greater light transmission over a wider range of wavelength. There are two notable features that are seen when comparing the loss spectrum of perfluorinated polymer to that of PMMA. One is that the spectrum for the perfluorinated polymer ranges from 650 nm to 1300 nm. This range is notably higher than the range for PMMA. The second outstanding

Examination of Curriculum and Assessment Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Examination of Curriculum and Assessment - Essay Example plan for learners in grade 3-5 the curriculum is well designed as it meets most of the requirements in terms of the objectives of the study the deliverables that are expected out of the learning process and the entire process it topped up with a comprehensive assessment, which will test the level of comprehension of the learners to ascertain if the objectives of the course were indeed met. The course is fashioned in the right manner and it will serve of great significance to the students since the knowledge that they will gain revolves around the daily experiences in their lives especially in the American society where the issue of immigration is a significant problem since there is an influx of a vast number of unregistered immigrants who illegal cross over the border to seek refuge in the country. Some of the learners may be experiencing this problem first hand thus, the lesson will tend to give them knowledge and facts about the issue while elaborating the background of the proble m and the potential solution that can be sought to solve it amicably (Hyland & University College, 2000). The immigration lesson plan is designed in a manner that it gives the learners an in-depth perspective on the topic by dispensing a pool of knowledge that is related to the issue of immigration in the world and particularly in America hence helps them to have a higher degree of risk and how experts use the very information and knowledge to formulate relevant policies that will help to deal and solve the problem amicably. Furthermore, the primary aim of any syllabus is to equip learners with the skills of critical thinking so as they can be able to utilize the knowledge they have acquired in class to devise a solution for the challenges that they face in their environment (Leyendecker & Akker, 2008). The immigration lesson touches on the social issues that are predominant in the American society, hence, the learners are privilege to utilize the skills of thinking critically and

VISION STATEMENT Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
VISION STATEMENT - Essay Example While there have been more exact and specific formulations of performance management, most notably by Dr. Aubrey Daniels who in the 1970s identified a technology specifically designed to manage behavior and results, for the consideration of performance management in this context, the essay will advance with the broader contextual interpretation. Recently Ford Motor Company altered an aspect of their performance management system to better evaluate employee performance. The past system had been the target of a number of law suits over complaints that it was skewed towards age discrimination. The new performance management system eliminates quotas from the performance rating system and updates the appraisal process through a newly updated system. This shift was the first major shift in performance management at Ford Motor Company since 2000 when the last system was instituted in an effort to increase bottom-line results and to alter the long stagnant corporate climate at Ford. (Karash 2005) The appraisal process at Ford Motor Company is based on a grading system much like one might experience in a university or high school scholastic environment. The companyââ¬â¢s performance management system grades managers at various company levels with an A, B, or C performance rating. The grade is based on a complicated rubric that includes a number of internal factors, but is also highly contingent on productivity measures. If the employee or manager is rated at a C level then this eliminates their bonus for that year. If the employee or manager spends more than one year at the C grade scale and receives this performance rating for the second year then they are potentially demoted or in certain circumstances released. Over 18,000 managers are rated through this grading system. While the average number of managers receiving the C rating was intended to be at 10% for a number of years, recent reports indicate that the performance management system

Management of Production and Operations - Essay Example The idea of having a supply chain within management became of immense importance in the beginning of the 20th century, when assembly lines were created. However it was not until the 1980s that the phrase SCM was by a consultant in the U.S. industry coined. The characteristics of the creation era of SCM include the need for re-engineering, large-scale changes, downsizing and extensive attention accorded to the practice of management by the Japanese (Lavassani et al., 2008b). The Integration era of SCM studies was brought around by Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) systems developments which occurred from the 1960s-1990s due to the launching of the Enterprise Resource Planning systems (Lavassani et al., 2008b). Given the advancement in collaborative systems that is internet based, the Integration era has continued to develop. It is characterized not only by cost reduction using integration but by the increase in value addition as well. Globalization era is the third movement of SCM development. The attention accorded to global systems dealing with supplier relationships and the getting bigger of organizationsââ¬â¢ supply chains across national boundaries into other continents is what characterizes this era. The supply chain of organizations, especially those organizations in the oil industry, started using global sources several decades ago. However it was not until the late 1980s that global sources were integrated into the core businesses of considerable numbers of organizations according to Lavassani et al. (2008b). The globalization of SCM in organizations with the aim of boosting their value addition, competitive advantage and cost reduction through global sourcing is what characterizes the globalization era. Phase one of the specialization era revolves around Outsourced Manufacturing and Distribution (OMD). Adoption of a specialization era and renewed focus on core

Theory Comparison Essay Example for Free
Theory Comparison Essay It has been a long established fact that man is a unique being. Not only is he different in his ethnic background, man also has variations in his behavioral pattern. Thus, man should be viewed and treated as an exclusive being. For a long time, Psychology can be said to have noticed this rather distinct attribute of man and have sought to understand man from this perspective. This they have attempted to do by proposing various theories that seek to tell us ways by which we should view the individual in the society. Notable pioneering leaders in the field of psychology, whose works and theories have greatly affected the growth of the field of study, are Sigmund Freud and Alfred Alder. These scholars propounded psychodynamic and Adlerian approaches to counseling respectively. Historically, both scholars lived during the same period and as expected, they were colleagues in the profession. Making a comparison of booth theories propounded by them, in counseling children, psychodynamic approach in counseling children and adolescents seeks to know the explanation of the behavioral pattern of the child while making an attempt to understand how the growth of children and adolescents can be affected by their experiences and relationship withy their caregivers. Psychodynamic approach also uses the dreams to infer probable disorders and based on this provide a course of treatment. On the other hand, Adlerian approach basis its therapy on the improvement of self-esteem. In counseling children and adolescent, the therapist encourages the patient or client in overcoming his or her inferiority complexes and self-centeredness. In addition to this, Adlerian approach seeks to help children to gain insight into their goals as well as ways of attaining them. In the counseling process, the counselor attempts to identify the fantasies that children and adolescent might have and also identify goals that are far from reach to the growing child. The counselor then attempts to redirect these goals so that they will not lead to other psychological disorders informed by the reality of not being able to achieve these goals. Because these theories are both theories in psychology, there are some aspects of these theories that are relatable. To begin with, both theories are psychoanalytic theories that aim at the same goal ââ¬â which is to provide an answer to thinking or mental disorders. Apart from this, both psychodynamic and adlerain theories recognizes that people man sometimes have some desires that are higher than him. In the case of psychodynamic approach, counseling seeks to identify some disorders based on fantasies that the patient has built around himself/herself. In the case of Adlerian approach, the tool used deals with the identification of goals set that are higher than the patient or client which when not met tends to build frustration. However, Freudââ¬â¢s psychodynamic approach is based on the assumption that disorders can be attributed to oneââ¬â¢s personal developmental experiences which causes unconscious conflicts that are directly responsible for the patientââ¬â¢s condition. On the other hand, in Adlerian approach, disorders are attributed to frustrations informed by inferiority complex. Apart from this, in diagnosing disorders, the method used in the psychodynamic approach is that of interpretation. Here, the therapist or physician listens to dreams, fantasies etc of the patient and seek to interpret the words of the patient. The physician seeks to link these dreams and fantasies as being the responsible for the present position of the patient. However, the method of diagnosis in Adlerian approach is not as interpretative as the psychodynamic approach. Also, the psychodynamic approach can be said to apply a ââ¬Å"past lookingâ⬠method in diagnosis while in the case of Adlerian approach it is a ââ¬Å"becomingâ⬠or ââ¬Å"forward lookingâ⬠way of diagnosing. In addition to this, the techniques used are different. In the case of psychodynamic approach, different forms of interpretations are used. For instance, it uses transference interpretation, genetic interpretation, and dream interpretation to understand the condition of the patient. On the other hand, the Adlerian approach uses psychotropic medications to ease the overpowering fantasies, encouragement to stay live. It also uses motivation as a tool and seeks to build the patientââ¬â¢s superiority complex. Reference: Mitchell, S.A., Black, M.J. (1995). What Makes Business Communication a Success
What Makes Business Communication a Success Introduction Business communication is vital for success in all business. Success in this context means, being able to accomplish a particular task or to achieve a specific objective. Good business communications in relationships either with fellow staffs or customers is needed in order to prosper. Business success can be measured in terms of the practicability of business relationships which is directly proportional to the quality of communication (Harvard Business School Press, 2003:122). In this paper I will look at the ways of achieving successful communication, the difference between slogans and media sound bites and how slogans are used to draw audience attention. Steps in Achieving Successful Business Communication The first step in successful business communication is to identify the communication weaknesses in a business. This can be through brainstorming where challenges facing the business can be identified. Such challenges can be obtained through reviewing the day to day activities of the business (Guffer Almonte, 2009:4). Some questions may serve as a guideline, these include: Have employees been provided with a good working environment? Are they happy with what they are doing? Has the business been able to satisfy all the clients? Is proper information provided to all stakeholders? Is there good flow of conversations? After reviewing the above issues, then the business has to address these challenges giving the first priority to the most troublesome. By addressing the challenges one by one the relationship in general is strengthened. There is need to develop proactive and constructive communication skills in order to tackle these challenges. Once a challenge is chosen, one has to consider the issues that make it a challenge then address them systematically. For example, a business may be faced by a challenge of unsatisfied employees; issues causing this may be inadequate communication, lack of a safe working environment or poor organization structure. If such issues are addressed, then that challenge will be tackled. Communication means more than just giving out messages; it involves speaking, listening, sending, and receiving messages (Guffey, Rogin and Rhodes, 2009: 4). In communication, listening is the key to success and most of the time listening gets people into problems because they do not practice it. For business communication to be successful, listening has to be proficient. Listening simply means holding back ones judgment and allowing answers to come from outside. When a business is faced with challenges, there are people who already know what the problem is. Allowing them to give their ideas concerning that particular problem really helps. It is not always easy to hold back and allow others to give their opinion but if this is practiced it results in business communication success (Krizan et al 2007:82). After listening and taking notes from the suggested solutions, a business can now move forward and define what it wants to achieve. This is a very critical stage and one has to be proactive in order to achieve success. One has to think about the benefits to be achieved and how they will affect the success of the business. A suggested solution may be to improve the businesss relationship with its customers. Strategies to achieve this includes but not limited to answering calls in a polite manner, addressing all concerns, listening to customers, responding to complains, providing information, and thanking customers for their support (Stone Jacobs, 2007:179). This helps in earning customers confidence. The next step is to prepare a communication plan that is proactive. This is a plan that is prepared after defining a business success and getting solution from the listening activities. Things to be included in the plan include: taking employees to seminars that cover topics such as customer care, organizing get together between employers and employees, rewarding employees, holding regular meetings, including major stakeholders in business decision, assurance to personal service among others. This plan does not concentrate in solving past troubles but in laying down a good foundation that guarantees business future success (Pride et al 2009:169). A communication plan should take into consideration the availability of resources and whether the business aims at a long term or short term objective. Once a communication plan has been prepared, the business now focuses on the implementation. The expected result should be kept in mind and the main constitute of the plan reviewed to make sure they are in line with the expected result. The implementation process should involve as many people as possible but it should have one person who is accountable to it. Once the implementation process is complete, the business should take time to reflect on what it has just done and consider whether it has been able to meet the objective of the plan. The final step of a successful business communication is evaluation of the results. One should go back two steps and review what was the objective and aim of carrying out the plan. The results should be evaluated to make sure that they are in line with the expectation. Once the business is satisfied with the result, it should take time to thank everyone who participated in the whole process and reward itself. Sound Bites Sound bites are brief statements that clearly state the aims, purpose, or nature of a certain product. They are taken from an interview of a person with authority such as a politician, a director, or a marketing manager of a certain company. Sound bites are considered to be the most important point from the interview by the people responsible for editing it and they are inserted into the news broadcast (Whitaker et al 2004: 289). For them to be effective they must use vivid self-motivated language, be brief and clear, outstanding and easy to repeat (Mclean, 2010:2). Slogans Slogans are short and memorable phrases that are used in advertising movements. They are aimed at drawing peoples attention to particular features of a product. The main purpose of a slogan is to emphasize an aspect that a company may wish to be remembered such as marketing its corporate image, product, or its consumer foundation. An effective slogan should give an overview of the benefits of a certain product, it should be direct and brief, give an implausible notion about the product or brand, and it should make the consumer feel a need for the product (Shimp, 2008:220). A slogan portrays the best image of a product. It should make a product appear as the best in the market. Examples of such slogans include: Guinness is good for you, Gillette- à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã
âthe best a man can getà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã , Persil -à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã
âwashes whiterà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã . Some slogans used in water conservation include à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã
âconserve water and conserve lifeà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã , à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã
âcut one tree, plant twoà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã , à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã

For communication to be effective it should embrace good relationships with major stakeholders of a business. One has to establish the weakness in business communication, address these weaknesses and allow room for listening. Communication means more than just giving out messages; it involves speaking, listening, sending and receiving messages. Listening simply means holding back ones judgment and allowing answers to come from outside. The next step is to prepare a communication plan that is proactive. This is a plan that is prepared after defining a businesss success and getting solution from the listening activities then evaluate the results of the plan. Reference List Guffer, M. E. Almonte, R. Internet Advertising Essay -- Computers Technology Media Essays
Internet Advertising The November cover story for Newsweek was entitled ââ¬Å"e-lifeâ⬠and the issue was dedicated to the many ways that the Internet is changing our lives and work. While the changes have affected many industries and many jobs, one of the biggest changes in marketing and sales is the rapid and unpredictable growth of Internet-based sales and advertising. Currently, many users benefit from the use of ââ¬Å"freeâ⬠email sites and Web-search portals, all of which are funded by revenues from banner advertising. (Sadly for these advertisers, many are increasingly able to ignore this stimulus). All types of businesses now want to reach an audience that is more consistently ââ¬Å"logged onâ⬠to the Internet. If the Internet is where the customers are to be found, then that is where advertisers must go. While many of us are acutely aware of this fact, few of us know enough about how to place ads, what types of ads are available, and how the industry is changing. This paper is dedicated to understanding this topic further. The Context: Who Is Spending On Ads and How Much? In 1997, businesses spent $600 million on Internet advertising, and Internet ad spending rose to $1 billion in 1998.[1] To put these numbers in context, it is useful to compare the growth in Web advertising to the growth in non-Web advertising[2]: Year Web Advertising Spending $ Non-Web Ad Spending $ 1997 600M 133 Trillion 1998 1B 155 Trillion Such a table indicates clearly that Internet ad spending doubled while non-Web spending grew by 17%, and these numbers give marketers some sense of the urgency and immediacy of the need to learn about Web-based advertising. Interestingly, marketers have caught on: studies show that total I... ...arketers in cyberspace are: consider what type of ads you want to place, consider carefully how you plan to measure success of your campaign- attempt to monitor mindshare as well as final sales. Chaucers Canterbury Tales - Marriage as Portrayed in Merchants Prolog
Marriage as Portrayed in The Merchants Prologue and Taleà à The story of Januarie's marriage to May and her subsequent infidelity with Damyan allows for not only Chaucer's view of marriage to come through, but also includes the opinions of contemporary writers. Chaucer allows his views to be made known as the narrator and his views could also be said to infiltrate the speeches of the Merchant. Justinus and Placebo's views are also accounted for as the fictional characters also air their opinions on the institution of marriage. In this way, Chaucer has allowed for a fair deal of discussion of marriage. Chaucer places the character of Januarie in Pavia, which has a reputation for brothels. In this somewhat uncouth place, Januarie is in a self-imposed race against time to find a wife. At 60 years old, Januarie is getting married simply because he feels that he should before he dies and believes that, like St Paul says, to get married purely in order to avoid sin, is perfectly reasonable. Januarie wants a wife of "warm wex" in order to be able to ply her to his own demands and needs. His friends would have liked to have advised Januarie further on his choice of wife, however there was no time. Januarie sees the marriage very much as a business transaction and he uses his friends to scour the land for suitable women as it is a quicker way of finding the best deal. Like Januarie, Justinus is concerned with the economic ideals of the union. However he does have further concerns as to the age difference that will occur. He soon sees the possibility of infidelity on the wife's part. Unlike Januarie who quite simply requires a pretty face and a weak character, Justinus advises that the woman should have "Mo goode thewes than ... ...nfidelity is wrong. The Merchant says little about the business like manner in which the marriage took place, but has more to say about the untrustworthy nature of women, his cynicism from his own relationships showing through his occasional selections of Biblical references to deceitful women such as Rebecca and Judith. The Tale's own deceitful woman, May, yearns for a more emotional relationship and believes that she finds this with Damyan. However, he holds what appears to be a more typical male view of marriage. It is much more enjoyable to be a bachelor and to have no ties. May's only emotional links with him, such as the letters they exchange, have to be disposed of in the privy. The mercantile, unromantic nature of marriage seems to be prevalent in most men's minds as women cannot be trusted unless perhaps under some kind of bond other than purely spiritual.

Hoboes and Tramps :: Unemployment Poor Essays
Hoboes and Tramps Hoboes and tramps represented significant figures in Americaââ¬â¢s history. The phenomenon of ââ¬Å"Hobohemia,â⬠the world of hoboes that was subject to its own indoctrinations, tells us much about the social and cultural climate of the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth century. Moreover, in examining the ââ¬Å"othersâ⬠of society, we gain a far better perspective of what circumstances modernist writers were working under. A hobo is defined as a migratory worker who is usually unskilled. Although a tramp is basically defined in the same manner, a certain distinction exists. It is often said that the difference lies in the fact that a hobo wandered and worked, a tramp wandered and didnââ¬â¢t work, while a bum, another similar term, neither wandered nor worked. Becoming widespread in the depression of the 1890ââ¬â¢s, the term hobo may have come from the slogan for farmhand, ââ¬Å"hoe-boy,â⬠or the phrase for ââ¬Å"good man,â⬠ââ¬Å"homo bonus,â⬠or from simply yelling ââ¬Å"Ho! Boy!â⬠while on the road.[1] The most important aspect of the rise of hoboes and tramps was the advent of railroads and the ability to move to different parts of the country. After the Civil War, many veterans were out of work, restless, and displaced; thus, they set out to travel and find new means for a better life. Described as a ââ¬Å"tramp army,â⬠these early vagrants were not viewed positively by the general public. Many Americans were unfamiliar with the problems associated with wage labor, mainly unemployment. Therefore, the tramps were not regarded as people who were simply out of work and looking for a new job, but at times as savages and symbols of evil.[2] As the nineteenth century came to a close, many of the tramps had already been on the road for close to twenty years. Their endless pursuit for a better life became in itself a way of life known as ââ¬Å"Hobohemia.â⬠Another distinction between tramps and hoboes is seen at the turn of the century. Tramps represented the earlier migrants in the post-Civil War times, while hoboes were tramps who had lived a large part of their lives as vagrants, thus interacting with other hoboes and forming a type of sub-culture that was independent, organized and at times political.

Albatross Anchor
Albatross Anchor is a small family owned business located in Smallville, MA. Albatross Anchor is located on 12 acres of land. They started out with four employees in 1976 and grow over the years to over 100. The company manufactures two types of anchors in different sizes. The types are the mushroom/bell anchor and the snap hook anchor. Albatross Anchor has many manufacturing problems which are the cause of the company not doing as well as it should be. The company is antiquated, worn and does not meet government guidelines. Albatross can be a company of the future with the application of much need upgrades and expansions. Question one A. Albatross Anchorââ¬Ës competitiveness in relations to cost below their competitors. They are 30% lower than their competitors. The cause of this is all the operation inefficiencies. They need to correct all of their problems in order to get in line with the competitors. The cost to manufacture is the same as the competitors $12. 00 per/lb. for mushroom/bell anchors and $6. 00 per /lb. for snag hook anchors. But, with the high price of shipping raw materials in finished goods not shipping out, and the cost of raw material, these are just some of the problems causing the company to lose money. The cost of the manufacturing process is hurting Albatross. The down time in between set up of the different anchors is a downfall of the company. They are paying workers to be there to wait for work to begin. The cost of raw material is high, since the company smaller than most. They will not get a better price as a large company would who manufactures more product. Cost efficient companies keep its capital, labor, and operating costs lower than its competitors. Then they must also provide a good price to its customers. Albatross Anchor should take on the method of Six Sigma This will help to achieve a level of quality, reduce costs related to scrap, rework, inspection, and customer dissatisfaction. B. The speed of manufacturing is a slow process; this is due only being able to produce one type of anchor at a time, which is called batch manufacturing. The time to switch from one process to another is 36 hours. The plant space is limited; it does not have enough room to have enough equipment to manufacture each anchor at the same time. The company needs to implement a score card to help with the operations strategies. The balanced scorecard has evolved from its early use as a simple performance measurement framework to a full strategic planning and management system. â⬠(http://www. balancedscorecard. org/BSCResources/AbouttheBalancedScorecard/tabid/55/Default. aspx) C. The flexibility of filling an order with Albatross Anchor is non-existent. The manufacturing area is too small to make both anc hors at the same time. If an order comes in and need to be produced in a hurry they are not able to do this, because of the lack of technology in having a machine to produce both without a long set up time. Flexibility is important if a company is to respond quickly to changes in the industry. Time is money. Companies that can design, produce, and distribute their products faster than the competitors will have the upper hand. (Russell & Taylor, 2007, Operations Management: Creating Value Along the Supply Chain, pg. 124. ) D. The technology at Albatross Anchor is antiquated and deprived and is no longer up to standards. The manufacturing process is not capable of continuous production. The time to switch from one process to another is too long. The equipment and process should be update, or replaced. The funds for these projects are considered to be a capital investment. Albatross should consider making this investment to have a positive effect on the manufacturing process. Once the company makes the investment into new equipment, they will also have to invest into training the employees to run the new equipment. The company may need to have new hires, ones that can possibly do the job with less training. E. The capacity and facilities have out grown what the company has now. The company was designed to be a small manufacturer. Albatross is sitting on 12 acres of land they would be able to expand to make room for better technology. They have plenty of land to become an aggressive modern company, who is producing a top quality product. They can be the top producer of anchors with the changes that need to come about. Capacity is the maximum amount capable of producing. Another why to expand the capacity is to consider outsourcing. Outsourcing would come into play when they cannot set up the equipment and they need to produce product to satisfy an order. Some things to consider are the cost of making the product, such as labor, raw materials, and overhead. The facilities need to be made larger. The area that holds the raw materials should be expanded and should be close to the receiving area. Finished products should be close to the shipping area. This would cut down on time by not having to move product from such a long distance. The receiving and shipping should be together on the side where imports and exports are done. F. Service to customers is not very good. Long lead times and bad shipping methods are cause for problems. Accessibility and convenience are also a cause for concern. By offering a quality product, be able to meet orders and a touch of individualized customer service, you add value to your offering and your customers experience a higher level of satisfaction. The process of benchmarking can also help solve some of the problem and help to become a better company. ââ¬Å"Benchmarking is the process of measuring an organization's internal processes then identifying, understanding, and adapting outstanding practices from other organizations considered to be best-in-classâ⬠(http://www. benchnet. com/wib. htm) The scorecard will also help determine where the problems lie within the service area. Albatross needs to come up with new designs of anchors to be more competitive, this will give the customers more options to choose from, bit the company needs to know how to make the process of making the anchors go smoother and faster. Based on the needs and perceptions of their target customers, they should either improve their products or reduce the cost of the product to enhance customer value. There are six things that influence a customerââ¬â¢s buying decision they are selling price, quality, dependability, flexibility, time, and service. These are all thing that a company must keep in mind to gain and keep customers. Customers do not want to buy products of the companies that they cannot trust. They want dependable producers. Question Two There are many ways that mushroom/bell anchors may be manufactured. Albatross Anchor is considering two new manufacturing processes (Process A and Process B) to reduce costs. From the available information below determine which process has the lowest breakeven point (this validates the process is more cost effective) and report your analysis and supporting conclusion. For each process the following fixed costs and variable costs have been identified:

HR Planning for British Airways Essay
Human Resources are one of the most important departments in any organisation. It plays a big role for the company and influences every employee because it is responsible for managing employee costs. However, Human Resources Department also has responsibility for many other tasks including Recruitment and Selection, Training. The most important task that performed by HR Department is Workforce Planning. Basically, Workforce Planning is the process when business needs to make sure that it recruits the right people. The recruitment and selection of best employees might be very hard. First of all, the company has to understand the importance of Human Resources Management and ensure they spend enough capital on each employee. As many companies nowadays failed to do that and canââ¬â¢t survive among its competitors. Human element is the key to potential success and it is what the company should care the most about. If you have the right employees with right skills and they are well motivated then they will perform a good job and will bring the company more profit. British Airways is one of the leading global airlines that I have selected for this assignment. British Airways is aware of the importance of Human Resource Management. Therefore, as the employer they are providing the professional environment for its employees where they can be treated with respect. British Airways also trains and motivates the employees by communicating ethical policies and socially responsible behaviour to them. It makes employees to work more efficiently. There are many external and internal factors that can affect Human Resource Planning and that any organisation should be aware of. The main external factors that affect British airways are political, economic, technological and social. The airline industry is highly affected by political factors. British Airwaysââ¬â¢ business operation and decisions are influenced by regulations and policies. Regulations can be such as routes that an airline chooses to fly, the business partners the airline works with, the airport slots it uses as well as the fare it sets and the infrastructure costs it pays. Safety and security is another area that is highly regulated by governments. British Airways is engaging with different governing bodies such as European Union and national government to ensure safety and security while causing minimal inconvenience to customers. The airline business is highly sensitive to any economic downturn. There are a number of factors that affected the business of British Airways. For example, prices increases in oil and commodities. Consumer and business confidence on airlines declined because of rising unemployment, uncertainty in the capital markets, the erosion of household budgets and falling house prices. Therefore the customers are likely to cut its costs on holiday and airline tickets which means lower profits for the company. Social factors that affecting HR planning need to be taken in an account by British Airways. Nowadays passengers are choosing trusted airlines, First of all the fall in the economy is also pushing customers to seek for lower prices. With the developing of Internet and other technological advances it is easier for the customers to choose among different airlines and even get personal recommendations online, therefore the customers became less loyal. As every other company nowadays British Airways is also affected by technological factors. Maintaining a corporate website which handles customer queries and reservations is a new requirement for the airlines. British Airways has managed with this task and also the company keeps regularly up to dated with its competitors and technology world. Making customers experience more easier and faster British Airways also uses online self check in and self check in machines at the airports which makes the process much easier for its customers. Like many organizations today, British Airways face several environmental issues such as climate change. Governments and policy makers are now creating regulations and policies that will require airlines to curb emissions growth. All airlines have to meet a comprehensive range of local, national and international environmental regulations As well as there is a number of external factors affecting HR Planning, there are also internal policies and procedures impact HR activities. For example, if the company is committed to promoting from within, HR must ensure employees receive appropriate training and development to be ready for promotion when the time comes. HR should monitor the number of employees eligible for retirement and ensure potential replacements or other staff members are trained to avoid a sudden departure of business

Atonement film essay
In the film, the perspective someone has on various events are shown to greatly contrast. An example of this Is an argument between two of the film's key characters, Cecilia and Robbie, at the beginning of the film. This argument is in fact shown twice in a row, once through the perspective of Celeriac's younger sister Bryony, and again close to the action. In Britons view, she observes through an upstairs window of their manor house an argument that she perceives to be full of sexual tension. She can hear none of what is being said, apart from Robbie sharply shouting ââ¬Å"wait! ââ¬Å".Her Inability to fully understand the argument meant that the little she could see, led to her making lady inaccurate conclusions as to what the argument was about. She assumes Robbie shouting is out of anger, and that the tension between Robbie and Cecilia is solely imposed by him. This is shown to be wrong when the scene is shown a second time, with this time showing that the argument was over som ething trivial, and the sexual tension was triggered by both Cecilia and Robbie. Because she had a skewed perspective, Bryony gets an Idea that causes many problems later In the film.By using these differing perspectives, Wright therefore forces us to consider what we are and rent shown in other films of the same genre. In most love stories, conflicts arise (and are resolved) in the course of the film. In his film, however, Wright shows how inaccurate having a single perspective on a conflict can be, making us doubt the truth in other stories. It is also a reflection on the real world application of perspective. Wright literally shows us that ââ¬Å"there are two sides to every storyâ⬠, and how the differences between them can define not only a film, but a life.Wright also uses time to expand on what is shown In his film. Unlike typical love stones In which a happily ever after is reached in not only the two hours of the film, but the limited amount of time the characters in th e film experience, Wright makes his characters live out their whole lives before the camera. The film begins in 1935 when Bryony is 13. She is shown at two other ages, at both 18 and 77, meaning the story we are told is 64 years long. This means that the characters' whole lives pass, and through this we can see their relationships develop and change over a large amount of time.As a result of a lie she told at age 13, Bryony spends her whole life trying to atone for the damage it as done, and by being able to see how she is still trying to atone for her actions 64 years after the fact means that we can truly understand the consequences of even small actions. This time-twist on the traditional ââ¬Å"butterfly effectâ⬠mean that we see exactly what effects her actions have not only on herself, but on the people around her. Two such people are Robbie and Cecilia. The theme of love between them Is years long like Britons is.This is because one of the effects of her lie was their de aths, only months apart from each other, 5 years after the lie was told. However, ring these 5 years we are able to see the ups, downs, twists and turns of their aging love. In doing so, Wright makes their relationship more realistic than what is typical in romantic films. The usual structure involves one, maybe two obstacles to be overcome before reaching resolution and a happy ending. Robbie and Cecilia, however, are faced with unending hardship and a lot of time apart. The increased length of relationship time we are shown results in the audience being more able to compare the film to their own lives. Real relationships are never finished. They intention, whether interrupted or not, until one or both parties are no longer committed. Robbie and Cecilia remained committed to each other up to their deaths, and by showing how they stood the test of time despite adversities, Wright reflects on the need for commitment and patience in relation to the constant growth of real relationships .This truthfulness in Wright's portrayal of relationships is extended by the lack of a true happy ending in the film. Love stories are watched because a happy ending is guaranteed. The lack of such assurance in real life means people crave some sort of promise that true happiness is a real possibility. By watching characters on a screen have (or earn) their happy ending we allow ourselves to doubt the possible disappointment and cruelty life could offer. In Wright's film, however, he plays with this idea. The film's two lovers, Cecilia and Robbie, are not allowed a happy ending. They die apart and alone before they can have their happiness, denied the happy ending we have learnt to expect. This is initially shocking to the audience, with Wright delivering their endings abruptly, and without apology. But it is this very shock factor that sets this film apart. If the film were to have a happy ending, t would have nowhere near the same effect on the audience.Instead of being content and satisfied, we are shocked, saddened, and, ultimately, challenged by Wright to not rely on a happy ending falling into place, but to make our own happiness. The film Atonement directed by Joe Wright refreshes a traditional love story with interesting twists and conventions. By playing around with perspective, time and the idea of happy endings, Wright not only made an interesting and challenging film, but also challenges traditional genre conventions. In doing so, his film is new and refreshing, despite being a typical love story at heart.

My Idea of Leadership
My idea of leadership without dominating is being able to inspire others, motivate, set a vision, communicate, and of course respect others. A leader must have an honest understanding of who they are, what they know, and what they are capable of. To be a successful leader, you have to be able to convince your followers, not just yourself or your superiors, that you are worthy of being followed. In my opinion, this can build confidence in your followers to have faith in you, in order to be able to lead. I strongly believe that good leaders are made rather, and not born.If you have the desire and willpower, you can become an effective leader. Good leaders are developed through a never ending process of self-study, education, training, and experience. My personal experience as a volunteer with the Kids against Hunger Program has allowed me to demonstrate being a leader without dominating the event. As a volunteer, I often would work with people with different capabilities and personalit ies. I learned if you respected the ideas of others they would respect you and often times my thoughts and suggestions would set the tone of the initiative and others would follow. As a student you take on many responsibilities to include attending school, the completion of assignments on time, and studying. Responsibility means that I will show up to school on time and ready to learn; I will pay attention in class and I will be responsible for making sure I am participating in class and not relying on others to get me through. I realize that being responsible does not always mean that I will always accomplish my goals, but being responsible and oriented helps me to better accomplish the tasks ahead of me.I take total responsibility for my life and would rather succeed than fail. A successful leader is one that is responsible; knows their strengths and weakness and is able to set realistic and attainable goals. Attendance is a frame of mind and a leadership characteristic in that you r desire to learn sets you a part from others. This is the frame of mind I strive for on a daily basis. Participating in classroom discussions, volunteering at my part time job to taking on added responsibilities, to being a team player in DECA and helping with fund raising for children that have muscular dystrophy. My experience has taught me that community involvement can lead to leadership roles. Often times when you step forward and out of your comfort zone you are being your self-worth for the type of individual you will be in the future. A recent group project in History class is a good example where each individual had specific responsibilities; however without an individual leader our group was unable to organize our ideas. I took this opportunity to step forward and volunteered to become the group leader, obtaining the cooperation of the other team members, which ultimately lead to our successful completion.

Sustainable Electrical Construction Research Paper
Sustainable Electrical Construction - Research Paper Example e industrial process whereby the various processes that go on in manufacturing and production will be treated with a sense of urgency for the conservation of the environment (ZinCo Worldwide, 2011). Detailed reason why this is so will be discussed later but it would be noticed that the rate of industrialization has left us all with very few options other than manufacturing as many of the goods and products we need as possible. In the present paper, the electrical construction industry shall be used as a case study whereby a critical analysis of the industrial process that takes place during electrical construction shall be undertaken to understand the options of sustainability available for industry players and how best they have played their roles in ensuring that these roles are well played. Why Industrial Process is a focus for Sustainability The United States and other countries commonly referred to as the power houses of industrialization continue to depend on massive industrial development for the running of their economies. Interestingly, it is when some of these powerhouses survive in their economic dealings that the global economic climate becomes stable and sound (Diadem USA, Inc., 2011). But as much as it is important to embrace industrialization, it is equally important to understand the risks and challenges that industrialization carries so that when these challenges and risks are known, the needed risk management interventions would be developed towards them. Indeed, industrialization is highly associated with industrial processes whereby manufacturing and production takes the larger part of industries. Meanwhile, the means or source of energy in powering most of these industries in the industrial processes demand the use of energy sources that have long been known to be very threatening to the environment (Ludwick, 2011). Apart from the source of energy, the waste produced in the course of industrial processes such as smoke has also been identifi ed to be highly harmful to the environment. Even more, the byproducts of most of the industrial processes have been suspected to be ill-treated and wrongfully disposed (Intelligent Design Group, 2011). Usability among end users also accounts for some instances of industrial processââ¬â¢ risk against the environment. This is because most end users have very limited knowledge on the best ways to handle the products they buy such that the products will not end up becoming a threat to the environment. It is against the backdrops listed above that it has become so necessary that industrial process becomes a focus for sustainability in the current research paper. Electrical Construction and the Environment Electrical construction is mainly concerned with the production of electricity and electricity products (Glavinich, 2007). This is often than by electricity construction companies. Lately, oil and gas companies have also been highly involved in this process. Depending on the locality and resources available to an electrical construc

Md5-8 - Coursework Example Also, it will be essential for them to monitor continually how the internet use development affects consumers and competition (Paley, 2005). Concentrating on the pricing strategies, Rolex watches employed a marketing strategy by using a premium pricing strategy. Rolex positioned its price distinctively from its competitors. The role of the pricing strategy adopted by Rolex watches was to portray its product as unique in terms of its quality and the reputable Swiss watches brand name. In contrast, Timex watches adopted a penetrating price strategy. Timex to penetrate the market resorted to having its watches priced slowly compared to its competitors like Rolex. It was meant to attract buyers and capture the share of the watch market. Both Timex and Rolex employed different pricing strategies. The difference is that Rolex highly priced its watches so as to have a distinct competitive advantage. On the other hand, Timex lowly priced its watches to raise awareness and penetrate the market. Basing on the Direct Marketing Strategies, there is a possibility that the internet or electronic direct marketing may replace old direct mail options and conventional catalogues promotions. The switch is because the internet as a direct electronic marketing tool is a more direct marketing tool compared to the conventional catalogues. The Internet enables consumers to be reached in an interactive manner. The rationale behind the switch to internet use as a direct marketing tool is because of its ability to communicate and carry out a promotion in a better way. Besides, the internet has proved to be less costly and enabled monitoring of the progress of the promotion and marketing (Paley, 2005). There is a justification to the reason there is a need to carry out a marketing audit of an in a unit of business even though its performance may be indeed

Module 6 - Essay Example Having built their reputation, Disney expected that it can easily penetrate the European market. Although there were other theme parks in Europe, the companyââ¬â¢s reputation makes customerââ¬â¢s lack close substitutes. As matter of fact, Disney entrance in France, not only deployed the monopolistic advantages that existing companies but also increased competition in the region hence improving quality. Tourism industry in USA is always negatively impacted by the strengthening of the dollar. Reduction in number of tourist reduces Disneyââ¬â¢s revenue significantly. To counter this, Disney opted to enter the European market. Research has shown that the euro and dollar strengths counter each other hence Disney can still capture their customers during dollar peaks. In a nutshell, Disney aimed at capturing tourists who are not willing to visit USA. Another motivating factor might be reduced costs of production. Although the cost French labor may not differ to US labor, capital is relatively cheaper. Moreover, France ought to be the best European country of their choice due to the availability of government subsidies on land. In accordance with the above, it can be concluded that Disneyââ¬â¢s choice of France as an expansionary strategy increased its sales as well as customer base. Business Organisations - Essay Example The classical school of organisation and management thought was mainly focussed on the overall development of organisations. It comprises of three theories of management, i.e. the ââ¬ËScientific Management Theoryââ¬â¢, the ââ¬ËBureaucracy Theoryââ¬â¢ and the ââ¬ËAdministrative Management Theoryââ¬â¢. The ââ¬ËScientific Management Theoryââ¬â¢ is based on well developed, specifically defined and definite principles of management. Such theories are often observed to assist the effectiveness of management in the organizations in its current status and in future as well (Agarwal, 1983). In the scientific management theory, managers are responsible for enhancing the productivity of the organisation. This theory was introduced by Frederick Winslow Taylor, who is regarded as the ââ¬Å"Father of Scientific Managementâ⬠. This theory was mainly concerned with its implication in the American Economy when it faced limited competitive productivity along with GNP growt h. Subsequently, four principles of ââ¬Å"Scientific Managementâ⬠were developed by Taylor. ... l strengthen the employer-employee relationship All of these four principles significantly support the managers to resolve problems related to the productivity of the organisation. With its virtues, these principles became extremely popular in the organisations of America which later influenced the business sector of Europe as well (Hartman, n.d). The ââ¬Å"Bureaucratic Theoryâ⬠was put forward by Max Weber which largely influenced the management philosophy of organisations in the 20th century with its emphasis on the organisational structure (Agarwal, 1983). According to the assumptions of the theory, the higher level authority would control and supervise the lower level in the hierarchy; the employees in the organisation must have requisite skill to be expertise in a definite task as per the ââ¬Ëdivision of labourââ¬â¢. Moreover, the ââ¬Ërules and regulationsââ¬â¢ in the organisation must be in a standard manner in order to facilitate coordination. There must also be ââ¬Ëimpersonal relationship to be existed in between managers and employeesââ¬â¢ so as to develop logical decision making process in the organisation. The competency level needs to be high as this would facilitate to remove biasness while hiring in addition to promoting the employees. It is essentials for an organisation to maintain the complete records of the entire activities in the organisation (Hartman, n.d). The ââ¬Å"Administrative Theoryâ⬠was proposed by Henri Fayol. This theory was later recognised as Management Process School as it entails that management is a continuous process that can be evaluated by its functions. Because of the fact that the theory considers almost every aspect of management, it was able to gain relevance in all levels of management and in different types of organisations (Agarwal,

Northern Rock PLC Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Northern Rock PLC - Essay Example In this way the government, representing the taxpayers, may recoup its investment and the bank may be returned to the private sector. A bank that shows consistent profit is attractive to potential buyers. To do this its financial strategy must continue its plans of further restructuring its business model. It must reduce its capital costs base by better cost management. And while pursuing and adjusting to medium term growth, Northern Rock must focus on innovation and new markets, and continue to build on transparent and open communication with its stake-holders. Discussion Today, under Government ownership, Northern Rock Plc has kept together some 70 branches over which it must wield a steady hand toward corporate profit in the interest of its stakeholders, the taxpayers, and its depositors. Since its black day of 17 September 2007, when depositors were shown on worldwide TV queuing in long lines outside the bank to make their withdrawals, the bank has went through several stages of restructuring. The initial one was the takeover by the government. Throughout these restructuring processes, the bank has sought to rebuild a substantial market for its mortgage loans, a market that is different from the business plan that the bank had pursued before 2008. Previous to 2008 and after Northern Rock became public in 1997, the bank soon embarked on a risky business plan that was coupled to a flawed bank regulatory system. Since 1997 Northern Rock was regulated by the newly created Financial Services Authority (FSA). The FSA did not share any information it had with the Treasury or with the Bank of England who was responsible for monetary policy. Both the FSA and the Bank of England were slow to step in and stop Northern Rockââ¬â¢s demise. The FSA had, in June 2007, instead allowed Northern Rock to decrease its amount of required on-hand capital. This action exemplified the regulatory system that allowed the bank to overextend itself in the speculative mortgage deriva tive market. But even today the bank as a retail and savings bank must rebuild its image and processes in the same waters of financial risk. During the period of the default, Northern Rockââ¬â¢s business plan was based on securitizing mortgages in the short-term wholesale market to support its long-term longs. It was packaging multiple mortgage loans and selling them as bonds to investors. This business model had depended on stability in the mortgage securities market and the confidence of those who traded in the debt packages. When the housing prices begin to show full scale plummeting from speculated highs, lenders stopped extending rollover loans to Northern Rock and they eventually took their money from the bank. In August 2007 credit froze up in the bank liquidity market and Northern Rock could no longer sell bonds over the face of a broad liquidity freeze. It could not make any new loans. On August 13, 2007, the bank requested emergency funding from the Bank of England. It was only after the Chancellor of the Exchequer guaranteed all deposits at the bank in later September did the resulting bank run stop. The present Northern Rock Plc was created from The Northern Rock Transfer Order which on 1 January 2010 restructured the bank into two banks, Northern Rock Plc, the savings bank with new mortgages, and the Northern Rock Asset Management Plc (NRAM) (NRP, 2011). The latter took over the "toxic" mortgage assets and is concentrating in mortgage loans. North Rock Plc began its

The independent variables in this case are five including short distance, direct flights, affordable transport, number of flights per day and affordable hotels. Since I have found that these are the four major attractions for the people traveling in low cost airlines therefore, they are the independent variables. The dependent variable is the sales of the tickets of each low cost airline. The following table describes the result of question that do people prefer to travel with low cost airlines. In the survey 77 people out of 120 claimed that they would prefer travelling in low cost airlines. However, out of 120, 43 people stated that they do not go for low cost airlines. It means more than 63 percent out of the total sample prefer travelling in low cost carriers, which is a significant percentage. Out of 120 individuals, 83 belonged to the age group of 19-25 and 35 belong to the age group of 25-45. On the other hand, only 2 persons fall in age group 45-65. Therefore, majority were professionals and students. Since the survey sample consist of 120 individuals belonging to different professions therefore, following table shows the description of their occupations. 38 respondents are professionals, 32 have managerial occupation and remaining respondents have other occupations (students). The following table shows why people are attracted by the low cost airlines. On the other hand, 36 argued that they are attracted to fly in these airlines because of their direct flights, 35 go for these airlines because of affordable transport. The major attractions for these people are short distance, direct flights and affordable prices. Basically the low cost airlines are

Political Correctness in the Media Essay Example for Free
Political Correctness in the Media Essay Political correctness in the media refers to the use of appropriate words and ideas to minimize racism in all its hideous manifestations, in addition to sexism and offences against identity groups of all sorts. In other words, it is a ââ¬Å"concept that one has to shape their statements (if not their opinions) according to a certain political dogma (ââ¬Å"Political Correctness,â⬠2008). â⬠Hence, it is rude to say ââ¬Ëniggerââ¬â¢ in an advertisement especially created for the African Americans even if a Caucasian Congressman uses the politically incorrect word in his home. However, during periods of history when certain races, identity groups or the weaker sex must be looked down upon ââ¬â according to policies created by the government to raise a race, identity group or gender over another, in the minds of the people ââ¬â it is not considered politically incorrect by the media to refer to those looked down upon as rascals, despite the fact that the notion of political correctness had originated during World War I (Lind, 2000). Given that political correctness must needs concern governmental policies at any given time, it is interesting to consider the fact that political correctness or incorrectness in the media has taken different forms according to governmental needs at different times. In the United States, racism in reporting against the African Americans seemed to have peaked during the 1950s. Perhaps the reason for the peak was that the whites and the blacks in America had shared a master-slave relationship in the past. The Civil Rights Movement had called for changing the status quo. The demand for equal rights for the blacks was met with resistance, however. This is the reason why an article published in The Birmingham Post-Herald in 1955 quotes a white sheriff thus: ââ¬Å"â⬠¦We havenââ¬â¢t mixed so far down here and we donââ¬â¢t intend to (ââ¬Å"10 Jurors Picked as Till Trial Opens,â⬠1955). â⬠The sheriff was, of course, describing the relations of the white race with the black race. The above mentioned news article was actually a report on a trial. All of the jury members selected for the trial were white men. Eight of the men were farmers and one of them was a laborer. There were ââ¬Å"eight Negro reportersâ⬠present at the trial, but all of them were ââ¬Å"segregated at a separate table (ââ¬Å"10 Jurors Picked as Till Trial Opensâ⬠). â⬠Considering that the theory of racism is based on the assumption that a race can be superior to another race for any number of reasons, the news report of the 1950s describes blatant racism. So, even though the blacks had worked as laborers for the whites in the past, for the reason that the blacks had served the whites as slaves, they could not be members of the jury even if one of the jury members was a white laborer. Contrary to the stance of the whites with respect to the blacks described in the above mentioned article, a news article published by The San Francisco News in 1942 describes the value of the Japanese Americans to the economy of the United States. The author of the article, ââ¬Å"Jap Ban to Force Farm Adjustments,â⬠states that the internment of the Japanese Americans would adversely affect the agricultural produce of California. The article refers to the Japanese Americans as ââ¬Å"[f]ast and efficient workers (ââ¬Å"Jap Ban to Force Farm Adjustments,â⬠1942). â⬠Even though the work of the Japanese Americans on Californian farms had required ââ¬Å"the most arduous form of ââ¬Ëstoop labor,ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ the article mentions that the white farmers would be able to handle it, but not as well as the Japanese American workers (ââ¬Å"Jap Ban to Force Farm Adjustmentsâ⬠). Stoop labor is defined as ââ¬Å"[b]ack-bending manual work (ââ¬Å"Stoop Labor,â⬠2008). â⬠If the news article published in 1942 had clearly stated that the white farmers will not be able to replace the Japanese Americans on the plantations because the latter were engaged in stoop labor which the white farmers simply would not engage in; it would have been obvious that the reporting is racist. However, this was not the case. Rather, the Japanese Americans are lauded for their efficiency in the news report, as some of them were capable of tending to forty to fifty gardens at a time (ââ¬Å"Jap Ban to Force Farm Adjustmentsâ⬠). Even though the Japanese Americans had been interned during World War II, the whites did not seem to look down upon them or consider them inferior. On the other hand, the blacks were obviously considered inferior because they had served the whites as slaves. These differences of perceptions are made clear by the news reports. Even so, racism against the African Americans is considered a totally taboo subject in the media in the beginning of the twenty first century. The reason for the taboo, too, is obvious: the African have a history of fighting racism in the United States. The government of the United States no longer wants to harass them through its policies and the media. As a matter of fact, the taboo is accompanied by policies such as affirmative action, simply for the fact that racism against the Africans of the U. S. is met with ample resistance on the part of the Africans themselves, as well as their friends among the Caucasians of America. Seeing that the United States government would like the country to maintain a semblance of a civilized nation, racism against African Americans does not make sense any longer. The ââ¬ËIslamistsââ¬â¢ are targeted nowadays. All the same, trends in racism reporting as described above reveal that this too would change one day, somehow. Political correctness or incorrectness in the media is undoubtedly related to political framing. As mentioned previously, it is the policymaker that decides what the media would eventually reveal to the public. Political communicators are skilled at framing the debates over controversial issues through an emphasis on policy goals that deserve the highest priority, according to themselves rather than the people they communicate with. Such rhetoric affects political attitudes by influencing the importance that individuals place on competing issues. Frames do not only affect opinions on the issues, but they also influence the judgments of the participants in the communication process with regards to the relative importance of competing values. Thus, political persuaders shape public opinion through the framing of their policy goals and choices (Nelson, 2004). Politicians attempt to control public perception through the use of words. Thus an encyclopedia has defined framing as ââ¬Å"a process of selective control over the individualââ¬â¢s perception of media, public, or private communication, in particular the meanings attributed to words or phrases. Framing defines how an element of rhetoric is packaged so as to allow certain interpretations and rule out others (ââ¬Å"Framing,â⬠2008). â⬠Moreover, media frames may be created by the mass media as well as specific political and social movements or organizations. As shown through the several examples mentioned already, the media works alongside political and social movements to control the perceptions of the public at large through the communication theory of framing. Hence, in recent years the media was frequently heard discussing the ââ¬Ëwar on terror,ââ¬â¢ seeing as the politicians had coined the phrase and used it regularly to advise the public about their policies concerning the issue. Another important example of framing in this context was the popularization of the term, ââ¬Ëescalation,ââ¬â¢ to describe an increase in troop levels in war torn Iraq. The term, ââ¬Ëescalationââ¬â¢ implied that the United States was deliberately heightening the scope of the conflict in a manner that was provocative (ââ¬Å"Framingâ⬠). Spielvogel (2005) points out that both George W. Bush and John Kerry, during the 2004 presidential campaign, had relied upon the moral framing of the ââ¬Ëwar on terrorismââ¬â¢ and the situation in Iraq as a battle between ââ¬Ëgood and evilââ¬â¢ in their day to day political discourse. Moreover, President Bush had employed this rhetorical frame ââ¬Å"to politically and morally cloak the war in Iraq under a larger war on terror (Spielvogel). â⬠Is war politically correct or incorrect? It depends on governmental policies at any given time. Now that the U. S. is going through an economic recession, perhaps war will become a taboo subject in the media and ââ¬Ënonviolenceââ¬â¢ would reign. All the same, if the U. S. government continues to perceive all Muslims as the enemies of the United States ââ¬â the media would continue referring to ââ¬ËIslamistsââ¬â¢ the way it does at present. Even though stereotyping is by itself a taboo subject, advanced degrees in mass communication are not helping journalists and advertisers to be honest in their understanding of people and cultures. Given the responsibility to relay truthful information to the public; journalists, advertisers and all distributors of entertainment and news across different mediums such as television, newspapers, radio, Internet, etc. should have known that all people and cultures cannot be appreciated through stereotypes. Moreover, through mass usage of stereotypes, the media creates a mass culture, the representatives of which consider it abnormal to step outside the stereotypes. According to the Media Awareness Network: ââ¬Å"The pressure put on women through ads, television, film and new media to be sexually attractiveââ¬âand sexually activeââ¬âis profound. The National Eating Disorders Association reports that one out of four TV commercials send some kind of ââ¬Ëattractiveness message,ââ¬â¢ telling viewers what is and is not attractive (ââ¬Å"Media Stereotyping,â⬠2007). â⬠Thus, the media happens to contribute to the mental illnesses suffered by an increasing number of people in our world. Although this form of stereotyping in the media may not have anything to do with political pressure, or political correctness and/or incorrectness, the fact that the media has stereotypes for women is accompanied by the truth that the U.à S. government has never been headed by a woman! The Media Awareness Network explains another reason for stereotyping before outlining other problems associated with stereotypes: Media stereotypes are inevitable, especially in the advertising, entertainment and news industries, which need as wide an audience as possible to quickly understand information. Stereotypes act like codes that give audiences a quick, common understanding of a person or group of peopleââ¬âusually relating to their class, ethnicity or race, gender, sexual orientation, ocial role or occupation. But stereotypes can be problematic. They can: reduce a wide range of differences in people to simplistic categorizations; transform assumptions about particular groups of people into ââ¬Å"realitiesâ⬠; be used to justify the position of those in power; and perpetuate social prejudice and inequality (ââ¬Å"Media Stereotypingâ⬠). Although the reason for stereotyping as described above is clear, the main reason for it continues to be understood as governmental policies. Of course, stereotyping is another form of political incorrectness in the media. Then again, there are those who opine that political correctness is a confusing notion, disallowing intelligent debates from changing our world for the better (ââ¬Å"PC thinking ââ¬Ëis harming society,ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ 2006). In other words, by trying to be politically correct or incorrect, the media is veiling the face of reality. Even so, the media is considered an important educator of society as a whole. Furthermore, the media has the power to shape culture by introducing positive changes. It is a shame, therefore, that people must consider educating the media so as to do away with falsehoods that it imparts due to political pressure. Undoubtedly, political correctness and incorrectness must necessarily concern governmental policies at any given time. Whereas the government benefits by the strength of the media through its declaration of certain words or ideas as politically correct or incorrect at any given time ââ¬â it is the public at large that suffers because it has been taught lies by the media. By perpetuating social prejudice, the media ââ¬â through governmental notions of political correctness and incorrectness at any given time ââ¬â may even shoulder responsibility for bloody wars around the world.
